The Artist of the Year - Miia Berg
Being able to create something, whether it's crafts, art or music, makes me feel happy!
Ever since I was little, I've been doing various kinds of crafts. But I had a very long break from all my own creative activities during my studies (music pedagogy and dental technology) and for a long time afterwards. Until I became unemployed from my job as a dental technician teacher (when the entire dental technician education in Helsinki ended) and I didn't want to just sit at home unemployed. So in the autumn of 2017 I started to study blacksmithing.
Those studies gave a real kick to reawaken the creativity inside me and I'm grateful for that! At the moment I work in a research and development laboratory for building materials. So art and music as a hobby serve as a good counterbalance to work.
This spring I wanted to challenge myself by painting portraits. I thought it was a fun experiment and I might continue with it in some form during the upcoming winter. I don't usually plan in advance what I'm going to do, but apparently I'm drawn to animal and bird motifs. There's so much I want to learn!
And that's probably what makes art-making so invigorating and inspiring! It's both therapeutic, meditative and joy bringing!
Vernissage Saturday 6th of September at 14 o'clock in the Art Hall in the Mittistan-building. Welcome!
